Renegade Tevinter Mage
In Tevinter, mages rule. In every other country, they are oppressed. Why would any mage in his or her right mind leave Tevinter? Because everything comes at a price and in this case, the price might be your soul. The Tevinter mages are obsessed with power. They are cruel and ruthless even among themselves. Weak mages are forced to serve a master and are no better off than slaves; a mage trying to raise himself to a position of power, on the other hand, will have plenty of rivals trying to dispose of him. Only the most powerful and ruthless among the mages survive and retain their freedom.
To gain power, almost everyone turns to blood magic. Blood magic does not only involve human sacrifice, it also involves making deals with demons. The magisters like to think themselves powerful and clever enough to come out on top of the deal. They have it all figured out, or so your teachers have been telling you, but you have seen enough of your fellow apprentices fail and turn into abominations (and a fair few of your teachers) to know that's a lie: the demons will get you in the end, even if it takes them a decade or two.
That's why you left: you want to be enslaved by neither demon nor human. The whole idea of blood magic either terrifies you or you despise it and anyone who practices it. Perhaps you're a good person who doesn't want to hurt another being. Perhaps you have even reached the conclusion that magic is so easily abused that the Fereldan Circle is preferable to the way things are in Tevinter; or you simply long for a quiet life without fearing for your life or having to hide and run and pretend.
Your former master or rival might be after you.
P.S. Many demons, especially the more powerful ones, speak and understand only Ancient Tevine, or pretend to. The more powerful magisters speak Ancient Tevine among themselves, esp. in public. You can speak, read, and write Ancient Tevine.
