Class FeaturesAll of the following are class features of the rune caster.
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Rune casters are proficient with all simple weapons, all types of armor and with shields (except tower shields).
Spells: A rune caster casts spells with out any somatic components and therefore does not suffer from arcane failure while armored.
A rune caster casts arcane spells which are drawn from the rune caster spell list. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time. She readies spells in the form of runes (see below). To prepare or cast a spell, the rune caster must have an Intelligence score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a rune casters’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the rune caster’s Intelligence modifier. Like other spellcasters, a rune caster can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Rune Caster. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high Intelligence score. A rune caster learns to prepare her arcane spells as runes inscribed on solid objects (usually small tablets of stone, but other objects like shields or even armors are possible). She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour to carve the runes. A rune caster can leave spell slots unprepared to scribe runes at a later time.
All spells automatically have a material component (the rune itself). By casting the spell, the rune is erased from the tablet. A rune caster cannot get around the runic material component by means of an ability or feat such as Eschew Materials, although she can use such feats and abilities to waive any other material components.
Scribe Scroll: At 1st level, a rune caster gains Scribe Scroll as a bonus feat. However, instead of scrolls she has to use small tablets of stone or other solid objects as an alternate medium.
Rune of Elemental Protection (Sp): Once per day, a rune caster can cast endure elements as a spell like ability. She must casts this spell on herself.
Skill Focus: At 3rd level, a rune caster gains Skill Focus (Decipher Script) as a bonus feat.
Rune of Physical Protection (Sp): Once per day, a rune caster can cast protection from arrows as a spell like ability. She must casts this spell on herself. The spell lasts for 24 hours or until discharged.
Share Runes (Ex): A rune caster can prepare a limited number of rune-form arcane spells such that they can be activated (cast) by any character. The spell’s casting time remains the same, and it is just as effective as a spell cast by the rune caster himself. The spell’s level is increased by two as if a metamagic feat had been applied to it. Each time this ability is used to prepare a sharable rune, that rune takes up one of the rune casters’s available spell slots for that day. A rune caster can prepare a maximum number of shareable runes each day equal to his Wisdom modifier (minimum 1).
Shielded Casting: At 5th level, a rune caster gains Shielded Casting (RoS) as a bonus feat.
Rune of Mystical Protection (Sp): Once per day, a rune caster can cast nondetection as a spell like ability. She must casts this spell on herself. The spell lasts for 24 hours.
Extended Rune Magic (Su): The duration of abjuration spells cast by a rune caster is doubled, as if she had applied the Extend Spell feat to them. However, this does not result in any change in level or casting time. Extended Rune Magic does not apply to the rune caster's spell like abilities.
Permanent Rune (Sp): At 8th level, a rune caster can inscribe his body and certain objects with permanent runes. This ability functions basically like the permanency spell. Therefore, the rune caster must expend a number of XP as mentioned in the spell's description and also meet the requirement of a minimum caster level. However, for the purpose of creating permanent runes her effective caster level is treated 5 level higher than normal. Permanent Runes cannot be erased by the erase spell. They can be dispelled as in the spell's description, but are merely suppressed for 24 hours if the dispel check result does not exceed the dispel DC by at least 5.
