CULTURES

African
Spoiler (Anzeigen)The continent of Africa is home to many different people, kingdoms and tribes, impossibly to subsume under one term. What in this game for simplicity’s sake is called “African Culture” actually refers to western, and to a smaller extent northern African regions, from where thousands of slaves were displaced to the Americas.
They could be from peoples such as the Biafada, Bran, Wolof or Malinke, caught and sold to work mines and plantations. Others are Moors, imprisoned or convicted by the Spanish. Consequently, their shared culture actually is the culture of this diaspora that shapes Africans in New Spain: Subject to slavery, struggling for freedom, all the while trying to find or preserve their own roots.
Characters of this culture might speak one or more of the many languages of their homeland. Yet most can also fall back on the traditional african trade languages like Hausa, Fula or Manding.

Playbook: The Freedman
As the Playbook suggests, it is assumed that Player Characters of African descent are indeed not slaves - or at least, not anymore. While it would be certainly possible to play a slave, their freedom of action is, by definition, most limited, which would leave this character at a severe disadvantage. Also, taking a role this directly subjected to the cruelties of slavery can make players uncomfortable.
Backgrounds: The Freedmen and -women intended for this game have different backgrounds that grant them the liberties needed to go on adventures. Cimarrones are rebels who broke their chains and refuse to return to a life of captivity. Militiamen on the other hand were released into freedom after they served the Spaniards as soldiers or sailors. Ladinos finally, being of mixed heritage, have been born free on either side of the Atlantic.
Belief: The typical belief for a Freedman is Vodun: a faith evolving around dealing with spiritual beings coexisting within our world. It is syncretistic and can, for example, easily be understood, disguised or mistaken as a form of Catholic reverence towards saints.

Ritual: Dance
The rhythm of the drum brings together the different individuals, who through dances and music grow together as a community. Often, the dance is conducted in a circular motion, which also lets Muslim slaves imitate the pilgrimage around the Kaaba.

When you Initiate Interaction of African culture during a dance, you automatically succeed. Then roll+African.

Heroes and Legends

Anansi
This spider-like trickster might be the most popular figure in the old folk tales, remembered and told among Africans in the New World. Anansi represents knowledge, wisdom and the art of storytelling. His “spider tales” can be humorous, but most of all they teach how to overcome a mighty adversary through cunning and wits. Because of this, Anansi is an important role-model for many slaves.

Queen Amina
The current ruler of Zazzau in West Africa has become famous for making her city a new centre of trade. Since young age, Amina trained herself for combat and songs tell of her as "a woman as capable as a man." She was the first to equip her troops with metal armor and is erecting fortifications around her cities. Some even hope that she will challenge the Europeans encroachment on the African coasts.

Gaspar Yanga
After being kidnapped and sold into slavery, this member of the royal family of Gabon lead a revolt of African slaves, leading them into the mountains near Veracruz. These Cimarrones have founded their own palenque there, an independent community of fugitive slaves. From the rugged highlands, his band now raids the King’s Road. And other maroons are following Yanga’s example, taking back their freedom.

Cuisine
Plantain, Cassava, Yams, Okra, Black-Eyed Peas, Peanuts.
Spice: Pepper.
Meat: Chicken, Goat, also Eggs.
Preparation: Fry in palm nut oil.
Drinks: Water, Palm Wine, Coffee.
Etiquette: Use fingers to eat.

Equipment
Africans in the New World have learned to make do with the simple and even makeshift arms at hand, turning inconspicuous tools into deadly weapons. In some African communities, the always scarce steel is valued higher than gold.

Machete
medium weapon, close range
Originally a tool for chopping undergrowth or sugar cane, this robust blade has become the very symbol of slave uprisings.

Spear
medium weapon, reach range
A traditional weapon, wrongly regarded as archaic. Easy to learn, but hard to master.

Hatchet
light weapon, close range
This light axe is favored by the natives of the islands for its effectiveness and ease of use.

Bow
light weapon, near range
A bow can deliver quick volleys and the arrows can be easily replaced.

Knife
light weapon, hand range
Even this small and simple blade can be dangerous in a desperate struggle.

Crossbow
heavy weapon, far range
The ability to kill without smoke or noise still makes the Crossbow useful for stealthy hunting.

Leather Jerkin
light armor
Made from thick buffalo hide, it protects the chest reasonably well.

What every African knows

Most of us came here as slaves. We are the ones to break our backs in the silver mines or on sugar plantation. We are being whipped, branded and sold. Even those who were born free had to find ways to survive, to earn respect, to not be broken.

To rebel and to flee into one of the hidden settlements is to become an outlaw. But to stay loyal, to serve your masters and to fight for them in the levy might yield an easier life or even release. All of us had to negotiate this hard bargain for themselves.

There are certain terms used for people with mixed heritage: A mulato is born from black and white parents, a zambo from black and indio parents and the child of europeans and indios is called mestizo. But as things get more complicated, those terms fit less and less.

Be careful: they have the power. You cannot afford to tackle your enemies head on. Therefore you have to use tactic, be smarter and quicker than they are. There is no shame in taking every advantage you can get.

English freebooters, who are mortal enemies to the Spaniards, have appeared on the coasts of Mexico. They specifically try to ally with the cimarrones, trading weapons and supplies in exchange for help in plundering Spanish riches.
Aztec
Spoiler (Anzeigen)The people of Tenochtitlan and its Empire used to call themselves Mexica, from which the name of the whole land has been derived. As the boundaries between them and the other  native inhabitants of central Mexico became blurred after the conquest, they begun to identify as Aztecs: the people from Aztlan, their mythical ancestral birthplace.
Rather late to arrive in the valley of Mexico, the warlike Aztecs borrowed and adapted many things from the cultures already established there, especially the legendary Toltecs. For over hundred years, Tenochtitlan was the heart of the “One World”. Although now being brought low by old rivals and new invaders, these golden days of Aztec rule are all but forgotten.
The Aztec’s language is Nahuatl. It is the dominant language of Mexico and forms a strong cultural bond throughout the different regions. Some also are able to speak the language of the Maya to the south. Finally, Priests have an own secret language to converse about sacred and academic matters.

Playbook: The Priest
Priests and Priestesses have a crucial role in Aztec society. As mediators between the divine and the mundane world, they are tasked with nothing less than keeping the order of the universe intact. Believers look to them when they are in need of guidance and the traditions of bygone generations are preserved in the Priest's words and knowledge. In times of turmoil, these are rare and precious goods indeed.
Backgrounds: Priests are very much reliant on their communities. Fire Givers are holy persons, allowed to conduct the most important rituals of their faith. Codex Scholars spend their time collecting knowledge, drawing images and pictograms in their invaluable books. Temple Hermits have pledged their lives to protect pilgrims and sites of worship, which is becoming increasingly complicated.
Belief: The typical belief for a Priest is Nahua. The Aztecs revere a pantheon of deities, who are often being worshiped through ritual offering. Some gods even demand human sacrifice. Priests of the Nahua faith learn their vocation at the draconic Calmecac school.

Ritual: Ballgame
The objective of this fast-paced sport called ollamalitzli is to bring a solid rubber ball to the other side of the field or through a narrow hoop, using only the hip, elbows, knees and head. It is played between two teams or individual contestants and often at the highest stakes.

When you Initiate Interaction of Aztec culture during a ball game, you automatically succeed. Then roll+Aztec.
On a 10+, choose one from the list below. On a 7-9, you also choose one from the list below, but your Inspiration is considered to be not highlighted for this interaction.
- A stat of your choice (other than Inspiration) is considered to be highlighted for this interaction.
- In this interaction you can solve a conflict by betting or playing the game yourself.
- You spot a glimpse of something hidden, secret or forbidden (GM’s discretion).

Heroes and Legends

Nezahaualcoyotl
The “Coyote who Fasts”, a ruler of the city-state of Texcoco, was a renowned poet and thinker. Growing up as an exile in Tenochtitlan, he later claimed his home and lay the foundation for the dominating Triple Alliance of both cities with Tlacopan. He not only designed the great dike, but also fostered law, scholarship and artistry, bringing about a Golden Age of Mexican culture.

Cuauhtémoc
The “Descending Eagle” was the last Aztec Emperor. After the death of Moctezuma he valiantly organised the defenses of the disease-stricken Tenochtitlan, forcing his enemies to negotiate. Thus he saved the city from destruction and preserved the Aztec way of life. A few years later, he was tortured and executed by the Spaniards, because he was suspected to plan a rebellion against them.

Malintzin
Also known as “La Malinche” or “Doña Marina”, she was the native lover, advisor and interpreter of Cortés, proving invaluable for his conquest of Mexico. Her legacy is disputed: some despise her as traitor to her people, while others regard her as the mother of the new Mexican people. Her son Martin Cortés - “the first Mestizo” - has been tortured and exiled, fearing he could claim his father’s right of rule.

Cuisine
Maize, Tomato, Squash, Beans, Amaranth, Chia.
Spice: Chili.
Meat: Insects, Crayfish, also Algae.
Preparation: Boil or steam.
Drinks: Maize gruel (Atole), Maguey Beer (Pulque), Chocolate.
Etiquette: Eat with moderation.

Equipment
Traditionally Aztecs did not use metal for their weapons, which at first struck the Spaniards as primitive. But they soon learned to fear these arms, which are now often modernized with the new materials available.

Obsidian Dagger
light weapon, hand range
The only weapon which is still always made from the brittle, but razorlike volcanic glass. It is a most honored ritual item, used for sacrifices.

Macuahuitl
medium weapon, close range
The Aztec warriors’ favorite weapon: A wooden sword, studded with rows of obsidian, sharp enough to decapitate any foe.

Cuauhololli
medium weapon, close range
This club has a ball from hard wood at its top, making it ideal for taking prisoners. It can also be thrown.

Tepoztopilli
Medium weapon, reach range
Uncommonly, this large spear has a broad head with sharp edges, making it useful for piercing and slashing.

Atlatl
medium weapon, near range
An ancient design; a lever arm to hurl light javelins with increased force.

Blowgun
light weapon, near range
Favored by the tribes of the southern jungles, it shoots small pellets or darts and is completely silent doing so.

Cotton Armor
light armor
Called Ichcahuipilli, these quilted layers of salt-encrusted cotton protect the body reasonably well.

What every Aztec knows

Our priests teach us that there have been four worlds like this one before, which were destroyed. If we fail to nourish this fifth sun, a cataclysmic earthquake will shatter the world again and end all mankind.

Much has changed: Our judge-governor of Tenochtitlan has to answer to the Spanish viceroy. Also, human sacrifices are only tolerated as capital punishment for criminals. And they have tried to convince us that Quetzalcoatl was Christ all along.

It has brought our enemies no luck to help the Spaniards seize power. The city of Tenochtitlan is more important than ever while Tlaxcala and Texcoco have declined into backwater towns.

Our once proud eagle and jaguar knights have been outlawed. But there are still out there, honoring the old gods with blood. The Spaniards still fear a rebellion, that is why they have made it a capital crime for us to acquire firearms.

It is true, we are not slaves - but what difference does it make? They own our land and we have to toil on their farms and ranches as vassals. The church claims to protect us, but only as long as they think they can convert us to their God.

Filipino
Spoiler (Anzeigen)Well before the recent arrival of the Spaniards, the vast archipelago of the Philippines has been a trading hub of the pacific world. People from Malaysia, Indonesia, China, India, Arabia and other countries settled among the natives of the islands, spreading the influence of their own Empires. The unifying spirit of this complex multitude of municipalities, kingdoms and states is one of seafaring, trading and adventure.
When Conquistadors overtook the bustling port city of Manila and used it as base for their galleons sailing between America and Asia, Filipinos were the first to be on board of these ships. While few Spaniards bother to distinguish between their many ethnicities and simply call them Chinos or Indios, Filipinos often know cultural diversity firsthand and adapt well to the chaotic opportunity that is New Spain.
Characters of this culture mostly rely on Tagalog, Malay or Arabic as trade languages.

Playbook: The Traveller
The call of distant places and new experience can take hold in anyone who listens to a folk tale about old heroes or hears the stories of traders returning from their voyages. Those who follow this call wherever it may lead them are called Travellers. For the people of the Philippine archipelago, who are part of a vast maritime trading network, nothing could come more natural than to embark on such a journey.
Backgrounds: Being a Traveller means to head to sea and into this strange and dangerous land - and then keep going. Adventurers are drawn by wanderlust and the urge to make a name. Smugglers are scoundrels, always looking for an opportunity for quick profit. Exiled have been forced to leave their home and can not turn back.
Belief: The typical belief for a Traveller is Muslim. While Buddhism is engrained in local faiths and the new Christian religion is on the rise, the Islamic world still dominates Filipino culture. Yet Spanish law forbids Muslims to enter the “New World”, forcing most to be baptised at least in pretense.

Ritual: Chewing Betel
Many Filipinos habitually chew the stimulating mixture of areca nut and betel leaf, treated with caustic lime. In New Spain, coca leaves and sapodilla gum are also used as substitute. When ceremonially offered or shared, it is the sign of hospitality, friendship or even love.

When you Initiate Interaction of Filipino culture while chewing betel together, you automatically succeed. Then roll+Filipino.
On a 10+, choose one from the list below. On a 7-9, you also choose one from the list below, but your Understanding is considered to be not highlighted for this interaction.

Heroes and Legends

Urduja
A strong and noble warrior-princess of legend, who is said to have personally lead a powerful army of men and women, raiding as far as rich India. She was a tall and beautiful woman with an adventurous spirit and spoke several languages. Urduja had vowed not to marry, except a man, that would defeat her in single combat - yet none dared to challenge her, fearing the disgrace of certain defeat.

Lapu-Lapu
This native chieftain is above all renowned for killing the portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, halting the Spanish encroachment upon the islands for years. The formidable warrior refused to convert to Christianity and defeated the Europeans in the Battle of Mactan. Legend has it that Lapu-Lapu himself never died, but has been turned into a stone statue, guarding the waters of his island home.

Rajah Sulayman
He is the deposed muslim ruler of the united kingdom of Manila, which has been recently swallowed by the Spanish Empire. “Soliman” and the other rajahs fought the invaders with tenacity and skill. Even now, the rajah is organizing the resistance, waiting for the opportunity to raise a revolt against the Spaniards. Maybe now, with the death of the conqueror López de Legazpi, this day grows near.

Cuisine
Rice, Sweet Potatoes, Water Spinach, Cabbage, Banana, Tamarind.
Spice: Vinegar.
Meat: Beef, Fish, Pork.
Preparation: Roast.
Drinks: Coconut wine (Lambanog), Fruit juice, Palm wine (Tuba).
Etiquette: Don’t eat with your left hand.

Equipment
When the Spaniards reached the Philippines, they were surprised to find the natives armed with swords and even guns. Filipinos take great pride in their blades, which shapes are as diverse as the tales told about them.

Staff
light weapon, close range
A wooden staff, valued by wanderers and useful for self defense.

Kalis
medium weapon, close range
A double edged short sword, also known as Kris. It has a wavy blade, which makes for effective slashing and thrusting.

Bolo
light weapon, close range
This heavy knife resembles a machete and can be used as a tool as well as in combat. Similar blades are also called Goluk or Parang and are symbols of masculinity.

Karambit
light weapon, hand range
A small hooked blade, made for wicked ripping moves. It is suitable for self-defense and regarded as a rather feminine weapon.

Kampilan
heavy weapon, close range
This massive, single-edged scimitar features a spiked tip and heavy hilt to balance. It has the reputation of being the weapon of head-hunters.

Bow
light weapon, near range
A bow can deliver quick volleys and the arrows can be easily replaced.

Chain Shirt
light armor
This light chainmail protects the upper body reasonably well.

What every Filipino knows

Being a stranger can give you freedom. It doesn’t matter if you came as a sailor, soldier, servant or slave. This vast new land has so much for you to offer and to explore. A true hero finds opportunity everywhere.

Trade is what makes people wealthy. And the people of New Spain can’t get enough of the colourful silk, fine lacquerware and delicate porcelain that the merchants of Manila buy and sell. Your wares, skills and knowledge are in high demand.

No one can live alone - even less so if times are hard. It is our nature to reach out and care for each other. You would be a fool to trust everyone you meet, but a friend is always worthy of your generosity and your love.

Without a handy knife somewhere on your body, you would hardly consider yourself dressed. Quarrels are commonplace among rowdy sailors and you wouldn’t want to be caught with your guard down. Choose a fine blade and take pride in it.

The Japanese have travelled with you. From Manila you know them as trading partners as well as as pirates. They adapt to New Spain in their own way, becoming mercenaries instead of merchants. It never hurts to have a Samurai on your side.
Japanese
Spoiler (Anzeigen)Japan, the so called Land of the Rising Sun, maintains a very traditionalist society, based on strict feudal laws with a militaristic ruling caste. The neighboring coasts of Korea and China have learned to dread the sight of pillaging Japanese warriors. Nonetheless, their artistically elaborate handicraft and trained mercenaries are bringing good coin on foreign markets.
But a few years ago, a bloody civil war has broken out between the numerous rivalling lords over who will become the Shogun, the real power behind the throne of the weak Japanese Emperor. In this fierce struggle, some even look to the recently connected Spanish Empire as a place to obtain the decisive advantage over their opponents.
The Japanese language has been considerably influenced by the Chinese, with which it shares a similar writing system. The art of calligraphy, linked to Buddhist forms of meditation, is especially cultivated, as is poetry.

Playbook: The Samurai
The Japanese nobles have a reputation as unequaled warriors, trained from young age and bound by strict codes of honor. But in this times of war, rules are often swept aside and everyone with exceptional skills at arms can claim to be a Samurai. In New Spain, it doesn’t matter. Here, Samurai are often handsomely paid to lead military operations, are agents of their own liege lords or have just fled from the war at home.
Backgrounds: Every Samurai should have a good reason to be Mexico and not in their homeland, where their duty would require them to go to war. Else, the stain of dishonor might be attached to them. Ronin are Samurai without master, living by blade and honor alone. Enforcers are soldiers and mercenaries who kill for the highest bidder. Ambassadors are diplomats, versed in matters of courts as well as battlefields.

Finally, she returns to her lunar home, leaving behind all sadness and compassion of mortal life.

Arquebus

What every Japanese knows

Being a Samurai means to follow bushido, the way of the warrior. It demands of them to be brave, fierce and proud, to educate themselves and master they martial art. All this in preparation for their ultimate fate - a ‘good death’.

Samurai without masters have been often regarded as dishonorable. But in these times of war and treachery, the ronin appear to be much closer to the ideal of an honorable warrior. Thus they have become folk heroes.

The empire of the Europeans is impressive, yet they remain barbarians. Most of them are illiterate and uncultivated and they produce little of value. Only their weaponry is useful, but our smiths are already reproducing their technology.

In this strange land, few take the time to memorize our full names. Thus it has proven practical to go with warlike nicknames and self-styled titles instead. People are paying more when they remember your name and shudder.

The Spaniards like to employ us as officers for their militia companies. Often they are composed from Blacks - free ones and slaves alike. We have little experience with these people, but this sure is a risky business.

Spanish
Spoiler (Anzeigen)The Spaniards are said to be a particularly proud people - and one can see why. Their colonial empire is the largest on the globe and the seemingly endless riches of the "New World" are brought to Spain by their invincible fleet. Their troops have subdued the Aztecs, Inca and other mighty people and are still hungry for more. This crusader's spirit stems from their century-long history of warfare against the islamic rule on the Iberian Peninsula, the so called "reconquista".
It is truly a Golden Age for Spanish culture. They call the whole Americas their own. Their homeland is united under a monarch from the mighty House of Habsburg, which rules half of Europe. And only last year, the dreaded Ottoman Empire was defeated in the sea battle of Lepanto.
Spanish literature and language is being bolstered by the wonder that is the printing press, while Latin and Greek are favored by scholars and Renaissance artists alike. There also is the aptly named lingua franca, a pidgin language which is spoken throughout the mediterranean.

Playbook: The Conquistador
Endowed with the permission of their King, these soldiers of fortune are drawn overseas to expand and solidify the ever-growing Spanish empire - and get rich in the process. Legends of the hidden cities of gold still ring true with the Conquistadors. But over 50 years after the conquest of Mexico, the task of this new generation of Conquistadors is even more complicated: They have to bring order to this increasingly chaotic land - but for this must rely on the help of those they claim to rule.
Backgrounds: Hidalgos are landless nobles seeking fame and fortune. Missionaries bring the word of god to the heathens. Explorers strive to fill in the blank spaces on the maps.
Belief: The only belief for a Conquistador is Catholic. It has been claimed that the conquest and conversion of heathen lands is necessary in order to save the souls of the natives. In Spain, the dreaded Inquisition is hunting heretics and false converts..

Ritual: Bullfight
Called corrida, the archaic duel between a single mounted lancer against a raging bull inside an enclosed arena is considered the ultimate test of bravery and prowess. Due to the cost of horses, fighting the bull on foot is also no longer unheard of.

When you Initiate Interaction of Spanish culture during a Bullfight, you automatically succeed. Then roll+Spanish.

Heroes and Legends

El Cid
A popular spanish poem tells of this heroic knight from Castille, who has been unjustly exiled. Cid fights in the Reconquista against the muslim Moors to regain his honor and captures and defends the city of Valencia. His daughters finally get married to the princes of Aragon and Navarra, laying the foundation to the unification of Spain. Cid’s main sword Tizona is fabled to strike fear into the hearts of lesser men.

The Lady of Arintero
A hundred years ago, a young noblewoman named Juana Garcia de Arintero disguised herself as a male and went to war, because her elderly father had no sons to send. She trained hard, fought valiantly and did pass as a male, until her armor was ripped open in battle, exposing her telltale breast. Nonetheless, she was highly rewarded for her bravery, even evoking the jealousy of Queen Isabella herself.

Juan de Zumárraga
Juan de Zumárraga was the first bishop of Mexico and “Protector of the Indians”, which brought him into conflict with worldly authorities. For him, evangelization should be accompanied by education: He founded schools, hospitals and brought the first printing press to the New World. Yet, de Zumárraga was also an Inquisitor, calling for the demolition of heathen temples and the burning of heretics.

Cuisine
Wheat, Olives, Onions, Chickpeas, Cheese, Almonds.
Spice: Garlic.
Meat: Pork, Mutton, Beef.
Preparation: Sauté in olive oil.
Drinks: Wine, Rum, Beer.

Equipment
The steel of the Spaniards is probably the best in the world, and their armament reflects this. They favor plain and sturdy designs, but are tested by the unfamiliar climate of the New World. Even in the face of growing dissemination, they try to safeguard their technology.

Side-Sword
medium weapon, close range
The successor to the swords of medieval knights has a straight, double-edged blade. It can thrust, parry and also slash to some extend. The needed stability although comes at the price of a rather high weight.

Halberd
heavy weapon, reach range
A polearm that combines pike, axe and hook, thus having an answer against nearly all kind of enemies.

Rapier
medium weapon, close range
A further development from the Side-Sword, perfected to thrust from every angle, at the cost of slashing capabilities. When used in a lunge or riposte, it can outreach most other swords.

Arquebus
heavy weapon, far range
This muzzle-loaded firearm is operated by matchlock and easily the most devastating ranged weapon available. But the Gunpowder is expensive and creates a lot of noise and smoke when fired.

Pistol
medium weapon, near range
Maybe the technically most advanced weapon of its time, this wheellock firearm is very expensive, but is deadly at point blank.

Breastplate
medium armor
This steel armor provides excellent protection of the chest, but not to the extremities.Together with the open Morion helmet, it is the typical armament of the Conquistadors and give good protection without sacrificing too much mobility.

Horse
Horses are the fastest way of moving known to men and being mounted gives the advantage of height on the battlefield. On the other hand, these invaluable animals make for big targets and are vulnerable to adverse weather and terrain.

What every Spaniard knows

Philip II., called the Prudent, is our king. He rules over an empire ‘on which the sun never sets’ and has appointed the Council of the Indies for its administration. But all they care for is that enough gold flows into the royal coffers.

It is illegal to enslave the Indios. The church has long declared their freedom and the king has agreed. African and even Asian slaves may be bought however, when they have been captured by their own kind in ‘just wars’.

The grand treasure fleet stays in Veracruz during the winter. It brings goods and passengers for Mexico City and loads up on Gold, Silver and Asian luxuries brought from Manila via Acapulco before setting sail for Spain again in February.

Gunpowder guarantees our rule over New Spain. Therefore it is strictly forbidden to sell firearms or ammunition to the natives, let alone teach them how to use it. The Japanese mercenaries have their own guns, however.

While Mexico yields many riches, there are rumors about El Dorado to the south and the Seven Cities of Gold to the north, that still remain to be discovered. Both legendary sites allegedly hold riches beyond any man’s wildest dreams.

Der Tod:
FAITHS

Buddhist
Spoiler (Anzeigen)Buddhists follow the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, called Buddha, who attained enlightenment reflecting on the nature of life. Believers are to to strive to become enlightened themselves, in order to help others that are trapped with them in this eternal wheel of suffering and rebirth, which is fueled by worldly craving. As it is as much a philosophy as it is a religion, Buddhism often can accommodate local animistic folk beliefs and ancestor worship, too. As such, it has unintrusively spread throughout East Asia.
The Buddhist faith is especially prevalent in the Japanese culture. There it has been merged with the traditional belief in divine spirits, called Shinto. In fact, Buddhism and Shinto are so closely connected that everyone considers them simply as two sides of the same faith.

Branches
There are many different schools and branches of Buddhism, but the following are especially influential in Japan.
Zen: Zen Buddhism teaches that enlightenment is a intuitive state of mind, which can be reached through meditation. Clarity of mind is to be achieved through self-reflection and insight, caused by exercises of beauty, purity and goodness. This focus on self-control, discipline and concentration has influenced the Samurai code of bushido. Also the tea ceremony is a recent expression of Zen philosophy and aesthetics.
Pure Land: Very popular among the common folk, this branch teaches that salvation can only be given by the celestial Buddha residing in his ‘pure land’ somewhere to the west. Thus, only strong individual faith would be needed in worshippers, rendering the strict discipline of meditations and mantras obsolete. In Japan, radical Pure Land monks incite the peasants and even defy Oda Nobunaga, who is answering with brutal force.
Nichiren: Nichiren was a 13th century reformer, who aimed to bring Japan peace and power through a unified faith. As such, his followers would often antagonise rulers as well as other Buddhist schools. Nichiren Buddhism draws its inspiration from the holy text of the lotus sutra. The sutra teaches that everyone has the innate ability to shape their own destiny. Its powers are invoked by the phrase “I place my faith in the Lotus Sutra”.

Practices
Meditation: Meditation might be the single most important practice of Buddhism. Through an array of different meditative techniques, the believer achieves a state of serenity, insight and heightened concentration. Doing this, the practitioner grows towards enlightenment..
Art: Aesthetic expression is considered a form of spiritual exercise. And every form of art can be a means to reflection: Poetry, painting, music, even flower arrangement or mastery at arms. Buddhism seeks trueness, intuition and simplicity in every move.
Teaching: Buddhism emphasizes the importance of teachers for one's spiritual development. As a result, Buddhists often experience a special connection to their teachers and are expected to accept their lessons dutifully and learn from them.

Symbols
Fire-Wheel: Called tomoe in Japan, this circle of two, three or more swirling flames represents the eternal dynamic of cosmic forces. In other parts of Asia the eightfold dharma wheel is more important, which symbolizes the paths to enlightenment.
Enso: Specific to Zen Buddhism, in drawing this minimalist circle with one bold stroke of the brush, a person intuitively expresses their spiritual constitution in this single moment. The circle can be fully closed or open, signifying either perfection or potential for development.
Prayer beads: These strings of beads are used to keep track of the number of recited mantras or prayers. A full chain consists of 108 beads, one for each mortal desire of men. The material of the beads - wood, seeds, crystal, bone - is relevant to its purpose.

Catholic
Spoiler (Anzeigen)Catholics are the largest denomination of the Christian faith, organised under the Church of Rome. Christianity is a monotheist faith, believing in the one true God. He gave his son Jesus Christ, born by the Virgin Mary, to redeem the world, whose teachings of compassion and hope are laid down in the the holy bible. Theologically, God exists as Trinity of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Finally, Christians regard the Sunday has a sacred and hold that that Christ will return on Judgement Day, in which believers will obtain eternal life.
The Catholic faith rules supreme in Spain, where other ‘heretic’ faiths are burned at the stake by the dreaded Inquisition. On the other hand, missionaries are being send to heathen lands in order to show them the light of Christ and save their souls from damnation.

Saints
As the bible is written in latin and forbidden to be read by anyone but the clergy, most Catholics turn in their prayers to saints. In New Spain, these are especially popular.
San José de Nazaret: Saint Joseph is the patron saint of New Spain and the spiritual protector of the indios that live in it. As the husband of the Virgin Mary embodies the virtues of obedience, poverty and chastity and is considered especially close to Jesus, Mary and God himself. As a diligent and caring father and husband, he often is invoked when someone is in need of protection from danger or about to die.
Santiago Matamoros: The ‘Moorslayer’ Saint James is the patron of Spain, where his legendary grave is a pilgrimage site. He is a warlike saint, performing miracles in battle against enemies of the faith since the days of the Reconquista. In the past, he has been invoked frequently when Spaniards tried to cast down the old Aztec gods or felt the wrath of the natives. Thus, many Conquistadors still use “¡Santiago!” as their battlecry.
La Virgen: The blessed Virgin Mary is a very important patron for all Catholics, but even more so if they are natives to Mexico. In New Spain, certain appearances of her in the style of native goddesses have helped many Aztecs to come to terms with this new, strange religion. The most famous of those ‘Mexican Marys’, Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, became the patron of converts and her shrine north of Tenochtitlan a pilgrimage site.

Practices
Baptism: Only those who are baptized are recognized as Christians and can be saved from hellfire. Baptism is done by pouring water over the head of the person to symbolically wash away their original sin. As with all Catholic sacraments, it has to be performed by a priest.
Eucharist: During this holy ritual of consuming bread and wine, Christians remember the last supper of Christ before his crucifixion. Catholics believe, that during this sacrament, bread and wine actually change into the very flesh and blood of Christ itself.
Penance: By confessing one's sins and receiving absolution from a priest, a person is freed from these sins. This reconciles them with their fellow Christians and saves their soul from damnation. Thus, many Catholics fear to die without having received this sacrament first.

Symbols
The Cross: The instrument of the torture and death of Christ is the universal sign of Christianity, as it also represents his sacrifice and resurrection and thus the victory over death. Catholics also trace the sign of the cross on their bodies before and after prayer.
The Rosary: Each bead on this string stands for one of three particular Catholic prayers. By counting through them, the believer achieves a sequence of spiritual contemplation. It is believed that Mother Mary is especially favorable towards those who pray the Rosary.
Icons: Images depicting Jesus, Mary or the saints are very popular items of Catholic devotion. They are carried along or placed at a special spot in the house. Many icons are emotionally venerated and, as some claim, can sometimes work miracles.

Muslim
Spoiler (Anzeigen)Muslims follow the Islamic faith, which shares common abrahamic roots with Christianity. Muslims also believe in the existence of a single true God and his angels as well as an eternal life following the Day of Judgement. But they consider not Jesus, but Muhammad to be his final and greatest prophet. The islamic scripture, called the Quran, teaches that the fate of men is predestined, because it is already known to the omnipotent God. Muslims are required to pray daily, to fast in the month of Ramadan and to give alms.
The Muslim faith, though originated in Arabia, has spread through Africa and India to Southeast Asia. The Philippines have been ruled by Islam too, which is now challenged by Catholicism. The Spaniards forbid ‘Moros’ to enter the New World on the pain of death.

Traditions
Without a head of religion, the Muslim faith has developed different interpretations throughout the far-flung Islamic World.
Mysticism: In Asia, the traditions of mysticism is prevalent among Muslims. Practitioners believe it to be possible for everyone achieve a direct experience of God. This is done by seeking out the inner, emotional nature of the divine through meditation, recitation or dance. Love and compassion are emphasized by this form of Islam, which is open for spiritual elements of local beliefs. Spanish authorities might thus easily mistake it for Buddhism.
Orthodoxy: The Middle East is home to Islamic Orthodoxy, which closely observes the rules of the Prophet as laid down in the Quran. This focus on the written word has lead to the establishment of schools of law, theology and philosophy. Orthodox Muslims are required to lead a pious and righteous life in order to obtain closeness to God after death. This is the Islam that Spanish authorities know and which they will not tolerate in the New World.
Folklore: Especially in Africa, the Muslim faith has been adapted to emphasize traits of the local folklore. For example, faith healing, magic and witchcraft is considered a normal part of everyday religious life. The belief in Jinns, spirits both benign or malevolent, as well as in the curse of the Evil Eye is strong in this folk Islam. Spanish authorities can be confused by such different religious customs, discarding them as mere ‘superstition’.

Practices
Purifying: In order to be clean when approaching God, Muslims wash face, hands and feet before prayer. Since orthodox Muslims are required to pray at least five times per day, this can make them seem almost suspiciously clean in some European eyes.
Pilgrimage: All Muslim believers should visit the holy city of Mecca in Arabia, the birthplace of Mohammed, at least once in their lives. But cut off from the trade network of the Islamic worlds, for many believers in the ‘New World’ this will forever remain a dream.
Halal diet: Islamic law states that not all foods and drinks are allowed (halal) for consumption: First and foremost the ‘unclean’ pork, as well as blood and alcoholic beverages. But especially the latter is a sin that humankind is not easily dissuaded from.

Symbols
The color green: Green has been associated with paradise and it is believed to have been the favorite color of Mohammed. Pieces of green garment are sometimes used by Muslims in hiding to identify each other. Also, white is considered the color of peace and purity.
The name ‘Allah’: Since actual depictions of God are suspected to be forbidden idolatry, Islamic art uses calligraphy to write the name of Allah or other religious texts in a beautiful manner. The style of course can change with different languages and writing tools.
Hamsa: A popular amulet in both Arabia and Africa, the Hamsa is shaped like an open right hand, if possible made from silver. It is supposed to ward off Jinns and the curse of the Evil Eye, protecting the wearer or a place from bad luck and evil witchcraft.

Nahua
Spoiler (Anzeigen)The religion of the Aztecs is a polytheistic one, consisting of a large pantheon of different gods, each tasked with certain functions or aspects of the world. It teaches that creation is a cycle of death and renewal on all levels of existence. As such, Astronomy and calendars are central to Aztec rites. And to keep the world from dying, both gods and humans are required to bring sacrifices. Of course, sacrifices of blood or even human hearts are the most precious and thus ultimately required to keep creation alive.
The Nahua faith is native to the ‘One World’, as the Aztecs call their home continent, and shares similarities to many other religions of the Americas. The Spanish Conquerors have restricted the use of human sacrifice, which remains a highly contentious matter.

Gods
Aztecs know many Teotl, from mighty and universally revered deities to small ones that might be just relevant to a single village. These are the most important.
Huitzilopochtli: The god of the sun, of war, fire and blood. He is the patron deity of the Mexica and shares their fate in victory or defeat. It was Huitzilopochtli who showed the Aztecs where to build Tenochtitlan. Due to his constant battle against the forces of the night, he requires sacrifices of human blood to let the sun rise again each day. Those who give their lives for him on the altar, in battle or during childbirth will be at his side in the afterlife.
Tlaloc: The god of rain and storms, of water and fertility. He is said to live in mountain caves, and his cult is way older than the Aztecs. Those revere him as benevolent giver of life, since without his waters, no plants could grow. People who drown or die by lightning or disease will go to Tlaloc in the afterlife. Tlaloc shares the Great Temple of Tenochtitlan with Huitzilopochtli, so sun and rain can work together in the duality of fire and water.
Tezcatlipoca: ‘The smoking mirror’ is the god of the night, of secrets, magic and power. Those who aspire to rule, be it Priest or King, are bound to humble themselves by paying homage to ‘him, whose slaves we are’. Rituals for Tezcatlipoca include the blackening of the body with soot and the burning of incense. This deity is the ancient rival of the bright Quetzalcoatl, who is now claimed to be Jesus of the Christian religion.

Practices
Sacrifice: To satisfy the gods, believers are required to sacrifice precious things to them. In human sacrifices, the heart is cut out with an obsidian knife. But different gods and occasions may call for differents sacrifices: blood, food, animals, flowers and so on.
Reenactment: Priests or sacrificial victims are often dressed up to look like a certain deity and physically represent this god for the duration of a ritual. Such a sacred impersonator is called ixiptlatli. Decorated Masks and coats are used in these occasions.
Timekeeping: Time is understood as a cycle, and Priests make sure the universal order of time is being upheld. Days and months have certain meanings and festivals to be observed. And after 52 years, a calendar is complete and the cycle begins anew.

Symbols
Calendar: The complex interplay of time, symbolism and the divine is embodied in the stylized calendar wheels and their depictions. They serve both as a tool of timekeeping and divination as well as expression of ultimate doom and the cycle of existence.
Animals: A multitude of animals provide Aztec religious art with a wide array of characteristics to draw from. Above all there are fierce eagles and jaguars, but also snakes and many more. Divine might itself is often associated with certain animals.
Skulls: With human sacrifice being a key ritual of Nahua faith, human skulls are often depicted or displayed and even beautifully adorned. As a symbol, skulls are hinting at the realm of Mictlan, the Aztec underworld, and thus at death and rebirth.

Vodun
Spoiler (Anzeigen)The belief in the world of spirits shapes many traditional African faiths, which have fused in Vodun. It teaches that the realm of the divine is not detached from the creation but instead is just a natural part of it. Coming to terms with these spiritual forces and honoring your dead ancestors is an essential part of Vodun. These entities called Orishas can give spiritual strength (Ashe), but alternatively also be summoned for various kinds of sorcery. They could be aspects of a transcendent creator or may have been humans once themselves.
Originated in western Africa, the Vodun faith has been brought to New Spain in the shackles of its believers. During this diaspora, the religion is transforming and about to accept many new spirits: Caribbean native deities as well as catholic saints (called Santeria).

Orisha
One could argue that technically the Orishas are no gods. And yet some of them have almost godlike powers.
Obatala: The oldest of all Orishas and the heavenly father of humankind. Obatala, always dressed in pure white, is probably the most respected of all Orisha and unites male and female aspects alike. He is a patient teacher, protector and keeper of peace. Therefore he favors those who think before they act. Considering all this, it is no wonder that believers of Vodun have little qualms revering Obatala in the form of Jesus Christ himself.
Ogun: He is a powerful warrior and the patron of smiths and metal work. Some say he was the first Orisha to walk the earth, clearing land for humans to settle on. He is strict and not afraid to spill blood, but is always just and will not tolerate evil deeds. Ogun is often depicted armed with an axe and accompanied by his dog. When African slaves seem to be praying to the catholic Santiago, chances are good they are actually paying respect to Ogun.
Oshun: Oshun may be the youngest Orisha, but she is also one of the most popular. Not only is she the patron of rivers but also of love, femininity and all things beautiful and pleasurable. She is generous and cries from joy when receiving respect, but laughs in cold anger when offended. Apart from her emotional side, she is also known as a great diviner. In catholic context, Oshun seems to wear the mask of various incarnations of Saint Mary.

Practices
‘Night Dancing’: The religious gatherings of believers often involve night-long dancing and singing to the rhythm of sacred drums. This can be done to invite Orishas to take control over their faithful during this trance, granting them insight or power.
Offerings: The Orishas are living beings that want to eat and drink like mortals do. Cooked food, fruits and even certain live animals are sacrificed to them. But of course they have different tastes: What pleases one of the spirits may offend another one.
Storytelling: To share stories about the Orishas is crucial in order to make new sense to the different versions known to the uprooted faithful. These patakis often may contradict each other, but what really matters is that they give spiritual guidance and help.

Symbols
Bead necklace: Called elekes, these collars are earned when being initiated into the faith. For every Orisha there is a different necklace to be worn by those who consider them their patrons. These beads are sacred and must be treated with respect.
Crossroad: All rituals between humans and spirits need to be blessed first by Eleggua, the Orisha of crossroads. Without him, no ashe could flow. Therefore, the crossroad is the symbol of spiritual contact and communication between past, present and future.
Serpent: The snake is an important symbol in Vodun and stands for fertility and power. Obatala as primordial creator is often associated with the coiling snake. This proves difficult to reconcile with catholic beliefs, in which the snake represents the forces of evil.
